Peregrino di Zanetto
born before 1527
Maker — Brescian
Established as a luthier in Brescia before Gasparo Da Salo, Peregrino di Zanetto is potentially the actual originator of violin making. Certainly, he and Gasparo made some of the earliest violas, and the oldest extant viola is by Zanetto. If indeed Amati made the first violins and cellos as variations on a pre-existing viola, then perhaps that first viola came from Zanetto.
