Luigi Tarisio
1790 — 1854
Collector, Dealer
Partnered with Vuillaume, Tarisio is legendary for collecting great old Italian instruments for next to nothing, then reselling them in Paris for maximum profit.
Tarisio scoured Italy for the old master instruments. He might trade with an old fiddler, getting a forgotten or neglected Stradivarius instrument — perhaps dirty or needing repair— for very little money, or even in trade for a far lesser but new violin.
Tarisio would then send the instruments to Vuillaume for clean up and repair. Often the violins might still have old baroque neck setups, requiring refits in the modern style. Similar trading and refitting was happening throughout Europe, at Hill and Sons in London for example.
When Tarisio died, Vuillaume found close to 150 old master violins at Tarisio's home base in Milan, including two dozen Stradivari.
Giuseppe Tartini
1692 — 1770
Composer, Violinist, Theorist, Teacher
Highly romanticized in the Faustian legend of his "Devil's Trill" sonata, stories of sword duels, dramatic periods of seclusion, and secretive practices, Tartini achieved great fame and success as a violin soloist. Moreover, Tartini wrote on music theory and violin technique. Tartini founded a school of violin playing, emphasizing a style which was both dramatically virtuosic, and projected an aspect of nobility and grandeur. Leopold Mozart, among many, was greatly influenced and inspired by Tartini. Tartini students include Alberghi, Graun, Nardini, Pugnani.
