Jean-Baptiste Lully
1632 — 1687
Composer, Violinist
Born in Italy with the name, Giovanni Battista Lulli, Lully developed into the leading musician of the French court, eventually becoming a French national and changing his name. With the King's blessings, Lully formed the 'petits violons'. Lully continued his long association with the famous '24 violons du Roi', but obviously relished the greater autonomy and control he enjoyed with his new 'petits violons'.
Lully became superintendent of music for King Louis XIV's chamber, and began a series of collaborations with the writer Moliere. Lully married the 20 year old daughter of composer Michel Lambert.
Lully is credited as a pioneer in developing the orchestra, and the practice of conducting. Lully led with a large staff, pounding the beat on the podium. Reputedly, Lully died from complications after smashing his foot with his conducting staff.
