Rudolph Kreutzer

            1766 — 1831

            Violinist, Composer — German

                  Wikipedia Bio

Kreutzer is remembered for his Etudes and his legacy as violin professor at the Paris Conservatoire.  A prominent Paris musical figure, Kreutzer was more broadly important in his time than we tend to realize.

Starting in 1790, with Jeanne d'Arc, Kreutzer wrote at least 46 stage works — all premiered at the Paris opera.  Kreutzer joined the Opera orchestra in 1801.  By 1817 he was principal conductor, and by 1824 Kreutzer became director of the Paris Opera.

Renowned as a violin virtuoso, Kreutzer performed throughout Europe.  Hearing Kreutzer during a 1798 tour to Vienna, Beethoven subsequently dedicated the Op. 47 Violin Sonata to Kreutzer.

Kreutzer studied violin with Anton Stamitz.  His students include Artot, Lafont, Rovelli, and Massart
