George Frideric Handel
1685 — 1759
Composer, Organist, Violinist, Oboist
The Great Hanover Master
As a very young child, Handel practiced keyboard in secret, against his father's strong opposition. At seven years of age, Handel's talent came to the attention of the Duke of Saxe Weissenfels, who gently intervened with the father. Now freed to openly study music, Handel became the student of the organist at the cathedral in Halle. With Zachau, Handel studied organ, harpsichord, violin, oboe, and composition.

Notes:
The traditional set of Six Violin Sonatas still commonly circulated was hobbled together from separate sources. Three of these Sonatas were originally published in a larger collection labeled Op. 1, Sonates for Flute, Violin, or Oboe with Basso Continuo, published by Roger in Amsterdam, around 1722. Walsh in England then republished the Op. 1 set in 1732 as Solos for a German Flute, a Oboe or Violin With Thorough Bass for the Harpsichord or Bass Violin. But Walsh substituted different sonatas for #14 and #15 in the Roger set. These two substitutes also became part of the later Six Violin Sonatas. The D major sonata was not published until it was introduced in the 19th century Handel-Gesellschaft as part its Op. 1.
