Maurizo Cazzati
1616 — 1678
Composer, Organist
Though largely unknown today, Cazzati was both a prolific and successful composer, and an innovator who laid important foundations for later instrumental music. Cazzati took the important early steps, transforming the established forms of his day, like the Canzoni, in ways which led to the development of the genre of instrumental sonates. From 1657, Cazzati served as director of San Petronio.

Archangelo Corelli
1653 — 1713
Violinist, Composer — Italian
Patriarch of Violinists
Corelli stands as one of the great figures in the history of the violin and the development of instrumental music forms. His Op. 5 sonatas were hugely influential.
Contemporary to Torelli, and Tomaso Vitali, Corelli developed the instrumental genre and the form of sonates. Corelli's work built upon the foundations initiated by the elder G. B. Vitali, Cazzati, and others at the accademie filarmonici and San Petronio in Bologna.
Padre Martini says Corelli studied in Bologna with Giovanni Benvenuti and Leonardo Brugnoli (a student of Ercole Gaibara). Counted among Corelli's students are Geminiani, Anet, Locatelli, and Somis.
